The Long Arc: A Teaching Series About David
Martin Luther King Jr. famously remarked that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Within this long arc of the universe lies the shorter arcs of our individual lives. Each one has a slightly different shape, but we all desire our lives to bend toward beauty and glory instead of chaos and ruin. But can we know the overall trajectory? Are there everyday habits and choices that can keep our lives bending toward beauty? How much of this is in our hands, and how much is in God’s hands?
In this series, we’ll be exploring these questions by looking at the long arc of David’s life as presented in 1 and 2 Samuel. Each week will focus on one particular event or relationship in David’s life and how each one, even the most disastrous, fit within the long arc. In doing so, we’ll be wrestling with the place of friendship, adversity, accomplishment, betrayal, and other common elements within the arc of our own lives.
