Incompletely Foreign

Sermon Series, Spirituality on December 7th, 2009 No Comments

This month we launch a new series – Incompletely Foreign – based on the Old Testament book of Micah. For many of us, the books of the Old Testament can seem obscure and far removed from our lives in 21st-century America.

This is particularly true when we turn to a “minor” prophet, such as Micah. But this assessment is too cursory and misses the ongoing power of writings of depth and understanding that speak without fail to the human condition, no matter what the age or time. Micah is a revelation. Refreshingly direct and straightforward, it confronts the religious and social ills and injustices of its day in clear and unambiguous ways, and calls its hearers back to a place of true humility before God and others.

Perhaps the heart of the book can be summed up in Micah 6:8, in which God gives a concise call to the life he seeks for us to live – not 3,000 years ago, but today: “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
